Gareth Lewis Fly Fishing

Fantastic tuition day which included an introduction to rods, reels, lines and casting lessons; learning about natural fish food types, fish habits and habitats, river craft, fishing techniques and fly types.

Having never fly fished before, Gareth pitched this to suit my learning requirements and the tuition given and progress of the day was tailored to my abilities. By the end of the day I really felt I had learnt a lot and had progressed in developing skills which has given me the confidence to further pursue fly fishing. Gareth was always willing to answer my questions and was ever patient and understanding working with a complete novice.

The lesson certainly met my requirements, was perfectly pitched. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

After some discussion Peter and I decided to hire Gareth's services at this relatively early stage of the season to brush up on our skills and learn some new tricks of the trade. We were not disappointed.

Anyone out there considering the services of a guide in the South Wales catchment, you need look no further. Gareth’s whole approach to the session was spot on. He is undoubtedly an expert and has a great deal of knowledge anyone can benefit from. Above all Gareth gave me and Pete the space to try what we’d learned making the whole session relaxed, easy going and fun, and despite the tough conditions Gareth got Pete and I into fish, both on the long flats and in the riffles.

When Gareth took me fishing he taught me how to set up the rod and how to cast. Using a fly that Gareth had made himself, he showed me the best places to fish and the best way to cast. Under his instruction I caught my first fish (a brown trout) and it was brilliant! I really enjoyed my day with Gareth, he was very patient and I learned loads from him. I can’t wait to go again.

In the absence of any sensible chance of fishing the Monnow, Lloyd and I decamped to the Derbyshire Wye. We both fished your tying of the Greenwell/Adams variant, #16 and #18 almost exclusively. On the first day we caught 70 fish and on the second, harder day, 25 between us.

Every fly looked the business and floated perfectly, obviously proved attractive to the wild Browns and Rainbows and all were really durable – none needing to be replaced due to wear and tear, just angler incompetence.
